Go to Any Length running group

Inaugural run Saturday, November 1, 20148:00 – 9:00 AM (rain or shine)Wissahickon Valley Park

This running group is open to anyone who wants to get or stay sober. We are a group of recovering people who enjoy running with others in recovery. We welcome beginning and experienced runners. No matter how fast or slow you go, you will not run alone! The point is fellowship and healthy living in sobriety.

Meet at Northwestern Avenue and Forbidden Drive in the Wissahickon Valley Park, near Northwestern Avenue and Germantown Avenue, Chestnut Hill.

We will start promptly at 8:00 AM and break into two groups:Beginning runners: gentle warm up, then a 1-mile run at a slow pace, then stretching and talking about beginning a running routine. Experienced runners: up to 5-mile run on packed gravel (round trip to Valley Green Inn and back on Forbidden Drive) at an easy pace.

When both groups are back together at the start, we will have a few minutes of open sharing, followed by a traditional closing. Afterwards, Bruno’s Restaurant (Northwestern Avenue and Germantown Avenue) is a great place for fellowship over coffee or breakfast, at your own cost. Contact LetsRunSober@gmail.com

Women's Running Clothes Wear Test

Here's a unique opportunity for a few of the women in the club to wear test some running clothes! Just let me know if you're interested and I'll respond to her.

 -----------------------------------------

Hello -

I am the marketing director for a small women's compressionwear start-up, Aspaeris (http://aspaerispivotshorts.com). We've sponsored the Hartford Marathon for the past two years and the NYC and Philly marathons last year and are looking for running groups to try our shorts and capris and give us feedback. We can offer your running group 1-2 pairs of product and also a promo code for your entire running group if they wish to order.

Our shorts and capris are specifically designed to help improve running performance by improving running form, preventing injury, and speeding recovery. With our patent pending banding system, our shorts act like built in kinesio tape without restricting movement.

Please let me know if your group would be interested in trying a pair or if you have any questions!

Thanks!
Runner's Survey

 -------------------------------------

Dear Running Club Administrator,

I am a Senior Honors student at Bryant University, completing my capstone research project. Like you and your members, I am a runner, and I am interested in the relationship between running, and a personality trait called "grit."

Angela Duckworth, an Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, defines grit as “perseverance and passion towards long-term goals.” The question I am trying to answer is if running is an indicator of grit, or do gritty people run? What is the relationship, and how do running and grit build upon one another?

I would appreciate it greatly if you could help me in my research. Below is a link to a short survey which allows me to explore the relationship between running and grit. Would you please send this survey to members of your organization? You can help me explore the relationship between grit and running. The results of this study will not only help my academic efforts, but also contribute to a greater understanding of running psychology.

All individual survey results will be kept completely confidential. There is no obligation to participate. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions at rvakil@bryant.edu

Link to the survey: http://surveys.questionpro.com/a/t/CQiiTZMqUX9

All the best, and happy running!

 Greetings.

I am an “alumni” runner with Shawmont Running Club in Lafayette Hill PA although I now reside in Newtown PA adjoining Tyler State Part and close to the Delaware River Canal paths where I put in most of my running. I was forwarded a copy of the “Rest Stop” Memo for the upcoming Philly Marathon. I am running the Half, hopefully. I defer to the LONG distance runners for the benefit of this facility. Thank you for the invitation.

I am also a member of the Philadelphia Frontrunners which is celebrating its 30th Year. Organized as an LGBT organization, we welcome all runners. Its base is in Center City.

I am also serving as Chair of Team Philadelphia for the 2014 Gay Games in Cleveland/Akron which will open August 9, 2014. This is the 9th Games and will host more than 10,000 athletes from around the world in 32 sports, rodeo, golf, band and chorus. We welcome all athletes to join in this event. All information is on the WEB.

Please extend this information to your members and if any are interested in the Games, please have them contact me.

We are also reaching out to all of the area running clubs to join together to improve and enhance running and to better organize for registration, etc with the “major races”. We are also affiliated with the ODDyssey Half Marathon in June and the Trenton Double Cross this month.

Team Philadelphia is a federation of LGBT and ally athletes with 12 sports, Rodeo, band and chorus with more than 1,200 participants in its programs which operate 12 months a year. We are affiliated with Arcadia University, Mazzoni Center, William Way Center and numerous other organizations.

Again, if more information is requested, we would be happy to provide it. Thank you for sharing this information.

Saturday, October 19, 2013 is "Build-a-Trail Day" in Blue Bell

Volunteers are needed for "Build a Trail Day" from 12 to 4 pm on Saturday, October 19 in Whitpain Township's Wentz Run Park. The trail will connect the park to Union Meeting Road to the benefit of our community. Most of that distance is on Township property, as you can see on this map. (Map: Wentz Run Park Nature Trail Extension).

This follows up on the December 2012 effort shown in this video. AARC volunteers that day were fantastic! We need to keep working to extend the trail to benefit runners and walkers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=RLHGQ-uXFCw

Volunteers will help to clear brush and limbs, line the trail with fallen logs, spread wood chips, and fill ruts and holes with gravel or dirt. Bring your own lopping shears, yard rakes, shovels, wheel barrows and gloves. We are also looking for volunteers with carpentry skills to help build a temporary bridge.

This will be a "shovel ready" day with the potential to make a big difference in the walkability of Whitpain Township for families and employees in local businesses. Please help us spread the word -- and the wood chips !

This event is sponsored by the Whitpain Township Park & Open Space Board. If you can volunteer, please call or text or email me. Tax-deductible donations, and contributions of snacks and drinks for the workers would also be appreciated.

Treadmills!

Looking for some good information on treadmills? The folks over at Review.com have dedicated many hours examining and evaluating over 90 different Treadmills. Based on a number of data points, they were able to narrow that list down leaving us with 19 standout Treadmills. Industry expert Andre Ashley and their research team conducted a thorough review of each of those options, evaluating 68 different features. The end result was a data-driven, non-biased rating for each of those treadmills.
2013 NYC Marathon

From the mailbag:

 Hello,

I’m reaching out to you from the American Cancer Society’s endurance team, DetermiNation. Due to the cancelation of the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, we’re left with several unfilled spots for the upcoming 2013 Marathon on November 3rd. We’re reaching out to running clubs out of state and would like to invite any of your members to run the New York City Marathon with our team. We are a charity team, so there is a fundraising requirement involved, but our program director is willing to lower fundraising minimums and extend deadlines for anyone that signs up before the September 15th deadline. All DetermiNation team members will receive a personal fundraising page, as well as a fundraising mentor and a personal go-to coach to assist with both fundraising and training. We also offer benefits like race day access to VIP tents at the start, coaching support along the course, and pre and post race events. If you’d like any more information to pass on to your runners, or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
AlterG Antigravity Treadmil

From the folks at Philly Rehab Fitness:

 Hello!

I apologize if I am contacting the wrong email address with this, but it didn't seem to quite fit in contacting any of the other listings on your website.

My name is Samantha Faulhaber. I represent Joy Carey, a corrective exercise specialist with an MS in Rehabilitation Science, Certified Personal Trainer and sports performance coach. We work together under Philly Rehab Fitness. Joy specializes in helping people with gait and movement issues, and we recently acquired an AlterG antigravity treadmill to help clients. The treadmill uses unweighting technology to allow running or walking between 20 to 100% of bodyweight and is used by the NFL, NBA, and top NCAA teams. We are the only AlterG in Philadelphia available for public use. The treadmill not only makes it easier to examine stride and footfall (there are three cameras analyzing stride from different angles, and at lighter weights stride is longer and lighter) and therefore improve running for any athlete, but really helps in recovery to lower body injuries that can't handle full weight. Many of our clients are Parkinson's patients who use it to do basic walking movements they can't do the motions of at full impact. We've also had triathletes in the machine just to push their training.

We are interested in helping as many people as possible through the treadmill and I'd was wondering if we might be able to reach out to your running group, especially with its great reputation. We are looking for any opportunity to spread the word about the AlterG. Time on the machine is bought by the minute and is distributable among any number of athletes, making it perfect for individuals or groups to purchase.

Please don't hesitate to email or call. 717-519-7289 is Joy's number, but initially it would be best to go through me at 443-365-6000.
Philly.com Best Places to Run

Hello!

Philly.com is putting together a collection of the region’s best places to run, and we were hoping you and your running club would help us in this endeavor. We will be creating a Running section on the site that houses recommended trails and running club profiles to let readers know a bit more about your club and how they can join.

The routes are not limited to those the club runs regularly; we welcome personal favorites of your members, too! If you or any of your members would like to share your favorite routes with us, please send:

- The route: Turn-by-turn directions and (ideally) a link to the route mapped on MapMyRun.
- Suggestions for shortening/extending the route
- Terrain: Road/sidewalk, path, trail, etc.
- Setting: Waterfront, residential, woods, downtown, etc.
- Any amenities nearby: Water fountains, bathrooms, parking, bike racks, etc.
- What makes the route special

If possible, please send your recommendations to abaker@philly.com by Sunday, July 28.

Thank you for your time. We hope to hear from you soon!

Runner's World 2013 Half Marathon & Festival

The Runner's World 2013 Half Marathon & Festival is looking for clubs to register and compete for the Largest Team and Fastest Team awards. Any volunteers to organize this for the club?

 Ambler Area Running Club,

The Runner’s World Half & Festival is back in Bethlehem on October 18-20, 2013! We would love for Ambler Area Running Club to participate and represent your club on the course alongside other running groups.

The weekend will include instructional seminars, live music, running films, a prerace dinner with the Runner's World editors, kids races, a 5K and 10K race, a half-marathon and more!

Six awards will be given out this year – three for the largest teams and three for the fastest teams. The fastest teams are determined by combining the top two male times and top two female times from each team. Team members are still eligible for individual awards and age group awards.

To further encourage friendly competition, the fastest team will have their team name engraved on the Runner’s World Cup, making its debut for our 2013 race.

In preparation for the race, Runner’s World will be hosting free training runs led by Bart Yasso and the Runner’s World editors at the Upper Saucon Park Rail Trail – 3231 Preston Lane, Center Valley, PA. (Just behind Copperhead Grille and across from the Southern Lehigh Library.) The dates/times are as follows:

Saturday, July 27th at 7:00am
Sunday, August 11th at 7:00am
Saturday, August 24th at 8:00am
Sunday, September 15th at 8:00am

Multiple distances and paces will be advertised for each run; however, we also encourage you and your team to simply join and run at your own distance and pace.

We look forward to seeing Ambler Area Running Club represented on the course this year. I've attached the options for participation – you can simply set up your team and have runners register for that team, or there are additional package options if Ambler Area Running Club would like to sponsor your team and cover race entries on the behalf of its runners. Either way, I’m here to answer any questions you may have or to assist you with the registration process.

Please let me know if you would be interested in setting up a time to speak in further detail.
Philly Marathon

From the Best Buddies Committee:

 Hi Jim,
I am working alongside a great organization, Best Buddies, to help recruit runners for the Philadelphia Marathon. Could you please provide the email below to the Ambler Area Running Club? My information is listed at the bottom should you have any questions. Thank you! Kim.

Imagine a world where you didn’t have any friends. Imagine waking up knowing that everyone you would see that day was a relative, or being paid to spend time with you.
Think about how that would affect your ability to go grab lunch with someone, vent about a rough day, or share goals you have---who would you call? Could you accomplish everything you have alone?

That is an unfortunate reality for many of the 8 million Americans with intellectual or developmental disabilities, but you have the ability to change it for the better, right here in Philadelphia.

Join Team Best Buddies in the Philadelphia Marathon on November 17th to help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as you strive to complete your running goals! Click here for a first-hand perspective of the Best Buddies program in creating lasting friendships for people with disabilities.

The mission of Best Buddies Pennsylvania, a privately funded non-profit, is to provide opportunities for people with special needs to create meaningful friendships and become an integral part in their communities. There are currently Best Buddies programs in 51 middle schools, high schools, and colleges across Pennsylvania that operate without state or federal funding.
